Summary:  Elizabeth Sloane is the best lobbyist in all of DC. She might’ve gotten more than she bargained for though when she agreed to work with an anti gun bill lobby group. What happens when the most powerful industry goes against the best lobbyist that Washington can offer?

The Good: The film builds up to one amazing finale, and if it didn’t the land the whole film would’ve been a waste of time, but the moment lands, and it was glorious. The film works in that kind of way. It’s a long drawn out movie to a few amazing moments, The film has about three of them, and they all kind of work. Jessica Chastain might get some award recognition if the studio gets behind her,  and she might deserve an Oscar nod. She was really great in this film.

The Bad:  The film feels tone deaf about real american politics, which isn’t surprising given the director. It feels like a film from an outsider perspective. Like a guy who only knows about politics through movies like ...And Justice for All and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I would’ve been more offended if the film didn’t feel so campy. It’s also intresting watching this movie just three weeks after Trump was elected. It gives this film a slightly new meaning. It’s funny how real life events can change a whole film.

The Ugly: It wants to be more than what it is.  The film probably could’ve shaved off twenty minutes and gotten t rid of a few bad sub plots that lead to nowhere. The film should’ve been more campy. It could’ve done a lot of things, but as is right now. It feels like a guy screaming at something that isn’t real, but the film doesn’t understand that so they use real events to try to trick you into feeling something and that’s the movies biggest offense.  It’s melodrama but it’s directed like real drama.

Film In Austin’s Review Grading Scale

No Zs – A solid, outstanding movie; there wasn’t an snoozing in this movie
– Good movie, sometimes the story may be lacking in some area, but it’s still recommended; only fell asleep for a quarter of the movie
ZZ – Average, entertaining at parts, it may be worth seeing, but you will probably want to wait and rent it; fell asleep for half of the film
ZZZ – Very weak where entertainment, plot, realism, development and other vital elements are missing; fell asleep for a third of the movie
ZZZZ – Very poor to the point that you will only recommend for your family and friends “not to see it;” fell asleep right when the movie began and slept through the whole thing.  Well, you will wish you had spent that time sleeping
