Summary:  Bad Santa 2 is the sequel to the popular 2003 black comedy Bad Santa. This story follows Willie Soke, played by Billy Bob Thornton. Willie is a down on his luck criminal who is trying to get out of that way of life, but trouble is always just around the corner for old Willie. Influenced to come back for one last big score can Willie get out before this way of life catches up to him?

The Good: I think the holiday music they use is pretty well done. The scenes between Willie and Thurman work when they have to. When the film gives its cheap feel good ending you do feel happy for Thurman, and that’s worth something.

The Bad:  This film feels like a bad standup comedy routine at times. There’s one specific moment that stands out when Kathy Bates’s character has to say this long convoluted joke about Willie’s nickname. The joke is such a hard setup they have to bring in an outsider to the scene to do the setup, but they even fail at doing that properly. It’s sad when the joke ends and they put all that effort into a poop joke.

The worst thing about this film is just how dated it feels. They could’ve done something clever about the changing PC culture of our time, but they couldn’t even go that far. They really just thought bringing out the hits would be enough to make a movie. I think they reference almost every major thing in the first film in this film. It’s not as shocking or as funny. The first Bad Santa had a charm of an indie movie, but this film is slick and feels bigger, but at the time same time feels cheaper. Almost none of the jokes land, which is saying something because they really throw so much at the wall to try to get something to stick.

The Ugly: The film isn’t very funny. It’s also mean spirited, and you can’t help but feel it’s about ten years too late. There’s some slightly funny visual gags, but after awhile this film just starts feeling like that 80’s metal band who never had another hit. They keep playing the same stuff without adding anything new to table. What was once charming now is just sad and seems lazy

Film In Austin’s Review Grading Scale

No Zs – A solid, outstanding movie; there wasn’t an snoozing in this movie

– Good movie, sometimes the story may be lacking in some area, but it’s still recommended; only fell asleep for a quarter of the movie

ZZ – Average, entertaining at parts, it may be worth seeing, but you will probably want to wait and rent it; fell asleep for half of the film

ZZZ – Very weak where entertainment, plot, realism, development and other vital elements are missing; fell asleep for a third of the movie

ZZZZ – Very poor to the point that you will only recommend for your family and friends “not to see it;” fell asleep right when the movie began and slept through the whole thing.  Well, you will wish you had spent that time sleeping
