Summary:  Two female swindlers battle it out to see who can pull off the best con.

The Good:  There are certain films that feel as though they are underwhelmingly predictable.  However, The Hustle had a few pleasant surprises.  The main surprise was that this film had an interesting and unexpected twist, which was a nice change of pace from the usual films of this nature.  Another aspect I enjoyed was that this film wasn’t a typical romantic comedy. It was funny, yes, but the romance didn’t play as large of a role as it does in a true romantic comedy.  The comedy portion outweighed the romantic facet, making me appreciate the film a bit more.  The other thing I liked in The Hustle were the parts with slapstick comedy.  Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect, Isn't It Romantic) seemingly has perfected tripping over things and getting hit with objects.  It was also nice to see Anne Hathaway (Ocean's 8, Get Smart) act silly and goofy for once in this aspect as well.

The Bad:  In regards to Hathaway’s overall performance, however, her acting felt a little flat.  It seemed almost as forced as the accents she had to use in this film and there were at least three different accents she used.  In theory, the film sounded great, but the plot was still shaky and didn’t appear to be fleshed out completely.  There were a few contradictions and things that got left behind, never to be mentioned again.  The film felt as though it was made hastily and almost idly.  Even the best part of the movie, the twist, didn’t show up until the last third of the film, and a lot more could have been done with it.  Although, it may have been a good thing that it came so late in the film so as not to drag it on any longer.

The Ugly:  The Hustle will most likely be enjoyed by fans of slapstick comedies or comedy films in general.  Overall it didn’t have much substance to it, but there were plenty of scenes that caused some big laughs in the audience.  It’s a light film to watch if you’re in the mood for something of that nature.

Film In Austin’s Review Grading Scale

No Zs – A solid, outstanding movie; there wasn’t any snoozing in this movie

Z – Good movie, sometimes the story may be lacking in some area, but it’s still recommended; only fell asleep for a quarter of the movie

ZZ – Average, entertaining at parts, it may be worth seeing, but you will probably want to wait and rent it; fell asleep for half of the film

ZZZ – Very weak where entertainment, plot, realism, development and other vital elements are missing; fell asleep for a third of the movie

ZZZZ – Very poor to the point that you will only recommend for your family and friends “not to see it;” fell asleep right when the movie began and slept through the whole thing.  Well, you will wish you had spent that time sleeping
