Summary:  When an arms deal goes awry, bullets start flying and everyone is a suspect in this witty action-comedy film by Ben Wheatley.

The Good:  The best parts about this film were the writing, the timing, and the actors.  All of these elements worked together so well that they made for a unique film.  Of course, there have been other films of this type, but what makes this movie stand out is really the comedy that the characters bring.  Brie Larson (Room, Kong: Skull Island) plays Justine, a smart and endearing gun broker who helps set up the sale of some guns for two IRA members.  Cillian Murphy (Inception, Peaky Blinders) plays Chris, a no B.S. IRA member who is also a somewhat nice guy with an apparent code of honor.  Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) rounds out this star-studded cast as Ord, a representative on behalf of the gun seller who doesn’t have his own agenda and is simply there to do his job.  Just about every character provides at least a small amount of comic relief, some more than others, but it was nice to know that everyone could be funny in their own way.

The Bad:  At one point, the plot gets so convoluted that you really don’t know what is going on.  That might have been the idea, to just make a huge mess, but it just didn’t come off very well.  Don’t get me wrong, there is a large amount of chaos and confusion, but when it got to a certain point I don’t feel that it was really doing anything for the plot or the film in general.

The Ugly:  This movie reminded me in part of a western, but also of a “who dunnit” type of film.  Everyone is out to get someone and many people end up not really knowing who to trust.  I am very glad that this film was a lot funnier than I thought it would be.  I think that is mainly what really made this movie.  If you like action and comedies, this is the movie for you.

Film In Austin’s Review Grading Scale

No Zs – A solid, outstanding movie; there wasn’t any snoozing in this movie

Z – Good movie, sometimes the story may be lacking in some area, but it’s still recommended; only fell asleep for a quarter of the movie

ZZ – Average, entertaining at parts, it may be worth seeing, but you will probably want to wait and rent it; fell asleep for half of the film

ZZZ – Very weak where entertainment, plot, realism, development and other vital elements are missing; fell asleep for a third of the movie

ZZZZ – Very poor to the point that you will only recommend for your family and friends “not to see it;” fell asleep right when the movie began and slept through the whole thing.  Well, you will wish you had spent that time sleeping
